Latin

The teaching of Latin (in Key Stage 2) at Barwick and Stoford CP School is intended to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum's objectives for Modern Foreign Languages. This includes:

Being able to listen attentively to the language being spoken and show understanding by joining in and responding.

Exploring the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words

Speaking in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases and simple writing.

Reading carefully and showing an understanding of words, phrases and simple writing.

Being able to appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language.

Being able to broaden the vocabulary and develop the ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary.

Being able to write phrases from memory and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly.

Being able to describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing.

Being able to understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high- frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.

By choosing to teach Latin, we believe it has a positive impact on children's reading, writing and spelling across all curriculum subjects.
