Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
Punctuation and grammar are taught alongside the writing elements of the English curriculum. Within every taught writing lesson, grammar and punctuation appears. This allows the children to learn and apply the rules immediately, consolidating their understanding and extending their writing practice. We encourage children to practice, self-edit and improve their writing, using ambitious vocabulary and good examples of punctuation and grammar.
Spelling is taught separately from Year 2. We use the Jane Considine scheme The Spelling Book.
This Spelling Rainbow is a fully comprehensive approach that targets the patterns of spelling, the pressures of spelling and the remembering of spelling. It covers ‘The Three Zones of Spelling’, as part of The Spelling Book system created by Jane Considine.
The three tiers of the rainbow contain 27 spelling lenses that were created by Jane Considine to aid in the successful teaching of spelling.
